Welcome Home Puppy! Peanut Butter and Honey Homemade Dog Treats

Make an easy peanut butter and honey homemade dog treat for your pet. Delicious for dogs and ready in under 30 minutes!

Over the past few days, I haven’t had as much time for blogging as I’d like.

I haven’t had much time for anything, actually.

I’ve had my hands full with the new addition to our family: an eight-week-old beagle named Calvin.

He is:

baby-beagle-puppy-playing-in-grass

two parts ‘boundless tornado of energy.’

He performed a flying backwards somersault when leaping out of my lap for a rope toy this weekend.

Completely unintentional, of course.

It was pretty impressive, actually.

Baby-puppy-beagle-sleeping

One part ‘sweet angel.’

He likes to curl up in my lap when he’s getting sleepy.

When he’s this cute and cuddly, a part of me wishes he’d always stay so small.

baby-beagle-puppy-close-up

And he is two parts ‘little devil.’

He grew bored of all his new toys within a couple days and now favors chewing on everything he shouldn’t.

Here he is chewing Meat-and-Potatoes-Guy’s sweatshirt.

baby-puppy-chewing-slipper

And now here he is chewing my slipper (to give you an idea of how tiny he is, he’s about the length of my size 7 slipper).

I have to watch him every second.

I left him in the kitchen (sealed off with baby gates) to brush my teeth and fix my hair.

When I returned, he had somehow forced his way into the guest bedroom and climbed into a large potted plant.  The pot is taller than Calvin, but he crawled in somehow. And he started digging, scattering dirt all over the floor.

I’m amazed at how much chaos 4 pounds of puppy can cause in under three minutes flat.

So I guess I should make that four parts ‘little devil.’

We haven’t even had him a week yet, and already he has me tied around his tiny little baby paws.

I’m completely head-over-heels for this little guy.

Naturally, I had to get into the kitchen and cook a homemade treat for him.

I found a recipe for healthy peanut butter and honey homemade dog treats from the book Beagle (Smart Owner’s Guide).

I baked them up for Calvin and snapped some shots of him trying out his first treat.

baby-beagle-puppy

Here’s Calvin, ready and eager for his taste test.

baby-puppy-beagle-eating-treat

He loved the peanut butter and honey homemade dog treats so much he sniffed out and lapped up every last crumb.

Calvin loves these treats.

Cannot get enough of them!

baby-beagle-puppy-eating-treat

It looks like I will no longer be the only member of the household with a huge peanut butter addiction.

peanut-butter-dog-treat

These treats are really easy and take no time at all to whip together.

This is a DIY dog biscuit recipe that’s healthy, whole, and completely all-natural.

Here are the key ingredients:

  • peanut butter,
  • honey,
  • eggs, and
  • whole wheat flour

I love giving Calvin a homemade treat, knowing all of the ingredients (and all of the love!) that go into them.

They certainly have Calvin’s seal of approval!

Oh my crazy goodness. Calvin is so, so, adorable. I remember when my four-legged baby was a baby and her little pink toes were just like Calvin’s, so soft and squishy like a new pink pearl eraser or pink taffy. He is precious. The treats look amazing too. Nicely photographed. Calvin’s ears look so velvety and his lips are so fluffy. I could just eat him up. Enjoy your new baby. I always say that puppies are really like a baby, but with sharper teeth and no diaper. Have fun!

Oh, that is so true. And we’re struggling with both the biting and the housebreaking at this point. But it’s all worth it πŸ™‚

  2. May 8, 2012 / 3:45 pm

Calvin… welcome to us !! You’re absolutely adorable – my favorite photo is you under the bed or what ever it’s. I don’t really agree that – math now give us .. doggy sweet recipes !! I hope she will get over that state next year sometimes. Looking forward to take part in your growing up.

    • May 9, 2012 / 10:30 am

I think that is Calvin’s biggest strength – putting smiles on peoples’ face! Glad you liked the photos πŸ™‚

Hi Calvin! You’re one very lucky little puppy to have such a lovely home to live in! Try to be good, and if you can’t be good don’t worry too much…. you’re SO cute that you’ll get away with it!!

O my Jen he is just adorable…he must be keeping you up at night and running all day! He’s so darn cute, how big will Calvin get to be when he’s full grown. Please bring him by the next time you come to Maine:0

    • May 9, 2012 / 10:33 am

He is waking up at 3am every morning for about an hour – it’s a struggle πŸ™‚ Calvin will be between 13-15 inches when he’s full grown. Perfect size for our little house πŸ™‚

  8. May 8, 2012 / 4:47 pm

He is absolutely adorable! I think there’s a good reason why God made puppies and babies so cute… we can’t help loving them in spite of the headaches they cause us.

    • May 9, 2012 / 10:34 am

I think you’re right – just looking into his adorable face makes all the work worth it πŸ™‚

  9. May 8, 2012 / 6:19 pm

    Hi,
Oh he is gorgeous, and those beautiful big eyes, you just can’t help but love him. πŸ˜€
Fantastic photos, I think they are all great.
I clicked over from Andy’s blog, and I am so glad I did. πŸ™‚

    • May 9, 2012 / 10:35 am

That’s great, I always like to hear from someone new πŸ™‚ Can’t wait to check out your blog too!

  10. May 8, 2012 / 6:37 pm

that face is just too cute – how do you not spend all day smooching him ! (the biscuits look good, too…)

    • May 9, 2012 / 10:38 am

Well, I spend a lot of the day cuddling him – I don’t think he’ll be much of a guard dog, the way I baby him!

  11. May 8, 2012 / 6:50 pm

Thank you so much for getting a pup and sharing on your blog. I look forward to watching Calvin grow and be incredibly adorable every step of the way, without the hassle of house training. Thanks again!

    • May 9, 2012 / 10:39 am

I plan to continue to post pics of Calvin – it’s nice to practice photographing something other than food! πŸ™‚

      • May 9, 2012 / 11:17 am

He’s such a cutey that I know you won’t have any trouble!

  12. May 8, 2012 / 6:51 pm

Calvin is soooo adoreable, but I know what you mean-no time when you have a puppy. I intend to try these treats with Ladd and Happy. One word of warning – we’ve had two adoreable beagles, but they are escape artists! They climb over and under fences and love to get out of your yard to go hunting!
    Joy

    • May 9, 2012 / 10:41 am

Thanks so much for the warning. With all the digging he is doing already, I can see that could become an issue for us! πŸ™‚

  17. May 8, 2012 / 8:53 pm

Adorable! Congrats on the new “baby”!

  18. May 8, 2012 / 9:48 pm

He makes my heart melt!! I can’t wait to hear the stories of how he changes your lives! So adorable!

    • May 9, 2012 / 10:50 am

We can’t believe how much a part of the family he is in less than one week! I will definitely continue to post photos and updates πŸ™‚

  19. May 8, 2012 / 10:21 pm

Calvin is SUCH a cutie!! Congratulations on your new addition! We have a dog, too – a puggle (part pug and part beagle) who would attempt a grown-up dog somersault for a treat like this. And if I make them, perhaps it will convince my husband I really do love her… most of the time. LOL…

    • May 9, 2012 / 10:51 am

Oh, I think puggles are so cute. I’ve tried getting Calvin to sit or stay or fetch for a treat, but we haven’t quite got that working yet πŸ™‚

  20. May 9, 2012 / 12:26 am

Oh my gosh – you just gave me my daily dose of “squeeeeee”!!!!!!!!! Calvin is sooooo adorable!!!!

  21. May 9, 2012 / 2:26 am

Calvin is so adorable!! I love his expressions and I bet he loved those perfect treats!

  22. May 9, 2012 / 3:06 am

Oh, I remember as if it were yesterday how the Misses Kotte (my two) tore my world apart, and my home upside down. Yet here they lie, not the least repentant as I tell them they were just like Calvin when they were little. Ahha – love:)

    • May 9, 2012 / 11:06 am

Oh, that’s so funny. Part of me wants him to grow so I’ll have a moment’s peace. But part of me wants him to stay this tiny, 4-pound baby forever πŸ™‚

      • May 9, 2012 / 12:09 pm

I’d talk severely to the part of you that wants him to remain a 4 pound bundle of destruction … Enjoy the cuteness, BUT put everything out of his reach, except for permitted chewing sacrifices – and I don’t mean a few yummy bickies – you know Beagles are greedy? Be careful of too many food treats:)

      • May 9, 2012 / 3:18 pm

Oh yes, I’ve been warned about how much the Beagle can eat! We quickly learned to keep everything, and I mean everything, out of reach. Just stopped by your blog and your dogs are adorable, by the way πŸ™‚

  23. May 9, 2012 / 9:25 am

I have NO WORDS for how adorable your new puppy is, I’ve always loved Beagles and he’s a little stunner. Hope you guys have fun and thanks for the recipe, I’m going to try it on my guy (who is sadly a long way from his puppyhood!)

    • May 9, 2012 / 11:07 am

Me too! (My childhood dog was part beagle). Well, if you try the treats, let me know how your little guy likes them πŸ™‚

  24. May 9, 2012 / 10:47 am

Oh wow, you have your hands full! But then again, they probably all play and keep each other entertained!

  25. May 9, 2012 / 11:01 am

Is there anything cuter than a puppy…I don’t think so. That is what saves them when they get into so much trouble.

    • May 9, 2012 / 11:13 am

You’re so right! He’s been up at 3am every morning, but it’s worth it. Because everything he does is so cute, he keeps my husband and I constantly laughing πŸ™‚

Awww … Calvin is adorable. I can’t stop staring at him πŸ™‚

  27. May 9, 2012 / 8:43 pm

OH!!! I’m dying. I grew up with beagles, and my parents currently have two. Aren’t they just the sweetest little things??? Calvin is just TOO CUTE. My parents’ beagles love peanut butter, too – wonder if that is a beagle thing? I bet they would love these treats!

Ps, let’s see what you think of his devilishness the first time he tries to eat something gross on a walk πŸ˜‰ That’s a beagle for ya! Congrats on your new family member!

    • May 10, 2012 / 12:56 pm

He needs to have something in his mouth every second that he’s awake – he’s pure Beagle, through and through!

  28. May 9, 2012 / 11:49 pm

Awe… Now you’ve made me nostalgic for when my little furry baby (who just turned 3) was 8 weeks old and 4 lbs. of energy. At the time I wanted her to grow up and stop peeing on the floor but now I kind of miss the puppy πŸ™‚ I actually just made her some homemade peanut butter biscuits for her birthday last month.

  29. May 10, 2012 / 7:40 am

Calvin is so adorable. Whenever I see puppies like this, I wish they would be puppies forever. Sigh, I know that will never happen. It is hard to be cautious of not spoiling them. I was even told once to never let a puppy (that will be a big dog when grown) jump or crawl into your lap because it promotes the habit of them jumping up on people when they get bigger. Very difficult because they are so cuddly!
Sweet of you to make him treats, peanut butter is my dogs favorite flavor! Thanks for sharing the recipe.

    • May 10, 2012 / 12:58 pm

So difficult to resist because he’s at his cutest when he’s getting sleepy and cuddly! πŸ™‚

  30. May 10, 2012 / 9:32 am

Hi again Jen! I made this for my guy last night and he LOVED them – had one and then trailed about after me all night in hopes of getting another. Thanks so much, you’ve saved me a fortune in dog treats πŸ™‚

    • May 10, 2012 / 12:55 pm

Oh that’s great – thanks for letting me know how it turned out for you! It really does save a ton of money, because just one batch really lasts! πŸ™‚

  31. May 10, 2012 / 10:52 am

Aw omgyosh I am dying looking at those pics of little Calvin! He is ADORABLE! The one with him chewing on the slipper is precious!

Homemade dog treats is such a sweet idea too, I need to try for my own puppy! She’s been getting sick of the store bought one πŸ™‚ I didn’t think it was possible but she literally won’t touch them anymore!

    • May 10, 2012 / 12:54 pm

She may love these! Calvin hasn’t been too interested in his regular dog food, but he goes nuts for these treats every time πŸ™‚

  32. May 10, 2012 / 1:57 pm

Oooooooh maaaaaaa gooodness! I’m TOTALLY in love. I want that puppy… I want to steal him and make him peanut butter treats, too!

    • May 11, 2012 / 7:22 pm

Would you like to borrow him for a while? I could actually use a little break from the biting and the chewing! πŸ™‚

I am going to be coming back to the post over and over again just to look at cute Calvin! Growing up we raised registered beagles and to me – there is NOTHING cuter than a Beagle puppy! Calvin is SO SO cute!!!!! And you are going to spoil him rotten! πŸ™‚

    • May 11, 2012 / 7:05 pm

Oh, me too – I had a beagle growing up and now I think there’s noting cuter πŸ™‚ Someone wisely commented that they were happy to enjoy looking at the photos of Calvin without having to do any of the work of raising a puppy! Enjoy!

  34. May 11, 2012 / 7:06 pm

That’s just how I feel when I pick him up and look at his big eyes – it gets you every time! πŸ™‚

  35. May 11, 2012 / 9:14 pm

Oh, how sweet! You’ll have so much fun with him over the years and I can already tell that he is a discerning pup. He recognized how delicious your treats for him are :-). Have a wonderful day. Blessings…Mary

Congratulation on your new member to the family. We’re big dog lovers,if you followed my blog you would see that. Are dog, now 6+, he showed up at are motor home when he was two months old. He went through the chewing stage, a couple of remote controls,a few cell phones, and our leather couch. We still love him very much. He likes peanut butter on saltine crackers so your recipe is something that we might have to try. Good times with your new friend and family member.

  37. May 12, 2012 / 11:57 am

I think someone’s cooking is going to suffer with a dog that cute! I’ll show the wife and see if I can persuade her to get one now. I’m soooo jealous.

  38. May 12, 2012 / 6:32 pm

He is just the cutest thing! My dog is part Beagle and she is crazy for treats. I mean CRAZY. I had a black lab before and her desire for treats doesn’t compare to this dog. She LIVES for food. Makes it difficult having her around when we are cooking/eating. She is sweet though.

  39. May 15, 2012 / 12:07 am

My goodness, what a sweet boy! You guys are going to have so much fun! Love the homemade treats too!

Such a cute little guy! Just a precautionary note about Beagles…they tend to gain weight very easily and can become overweight before you know it. Keep him exercised often and be careful about treats and table food.

    • May 17, 2012 / 1:31 pm

Thank you for the note. πŸ™‚ I’ve been warned about this by my vet too, so we’re not feeding him any table food at all. Hopefully this will keep him from begging!

Oh my goodness, I am dying over how cute Calvin is! So glad to be a new Foodbuzz pal, especially for this dose of cuteness!

How cute! I have 14 year old Beagle named Oskar who used to look just like your Calvin not so long ago..or so it seems. Reminds me of the good days! He is still an adorable dog, very sweet and cuddly…but as many Beagles, he’s been a thief all his life! I remember having to eat frozen breaded fish while our guestd had salmon fillets, because he had jumped on the table and eaten one before I could stop him. It’s been years, and I still have no no idea how he made it up there..You shall have lots of funfun..and stories to tell for the next few years! πŸ™‚

  44. June 14, 2012 / 2:27 pm

oh my gosh I love these pictures! these remind me of when my beagle was a puppy (she’s 5 now). melt my heart…. beagles are the best : ) mine still loves to snuggle (and even sleeps in the bed with us – so bad!)

  45. August 1, 2012 / 4:22 pm

Oh my goodness, that is NOT your dog. That is the cutest! We have two beagles, beagle puppies are the CUTEST! Awwwww. I’ll have to go cuddle mine. Just make sure you have a good fence up – those noses are relentless!
