It was just an ordinary day, and I was on my morning commute to work. I approached a busy intersection at the heart of the university campus where I worked.
I was first in line at the stoplight, with a large truck on my left in the turning lane. I couldn’t see around the truck but didn’t think it mattered since I was going straight ahead.
I was lost in my own world, listening to music. When I stopped, I put my car in neutral. I don’t know why I did this. I never put my car in neutral!
My body acted without any conscious thought, completely involuntary.
When the light turned green, I pressed on the gas, but the car didn’t move. I was confused because, as I said, I didn’t realize I’d put my car in neutral. I couldn’t understand why it wasn’t moving.
Just then, a student on a bicycle came barreling across the street in front of me from the left. The bicyclist had been on the other side of the truck, running the red light.
My mouth dropped open in total shock.
If my car had been in drive instead of neutral, we would’ve collided head-on, with no chance of us missing each other!
I will never know why I put my car in neutral. As I mentioned, I wasn’t even consciously aware that I’d done it.
But here’s what think: I believe that a guardian angel was either looking out for me or watching over that student!
