I Met An Angel and Didn’t Know

A single moment can change everything. But what if that moment was never meant to be understood — until much later?

I-Met-An-Angel-and-Didn't-Know

It was August of 1998.

I had just delivered my beautiful and healthy baby girl at the Mercy Medical Center, a Catholic hospital.

Still in the glow of welcoming my precious daughter into the world, I was sitting in my hospital room.

The joy of the occasion hung thick in the air.

My husband was by my side.

I felt our family was now complete with the addition of baby McKenna joining her older brother, Brendan.

I was the portrait of happiness.

As I sat there, speaking softly to my newborn, an unusual figure appeared.

I looked up to see an elderly nun moving quietly in the hallway, her gray habit sweeping past the doorway.

She seemed like a relic from another time. The nun’s presence was striking, like a ghost from the past.

I thought little of it, at first.

But then the woman entered my room.

What I remember most was the incredible sense of peace surrounding her.

She walked directly to my bedside, her gaze locking with mine.

“I can tell you are a wonderful mother,” the nun said, her voice calm and warm. “God bless you.”

And just as quickly and silently as she’d come, she was gone.

For years, I carried this brief, inexplicable moment with me.

The nun brought with her such an otherworldly sense of peace.

Her kind words were a source of deep comfort.

But it wasn’t until nearly fifteen years later that the significance of that encounter finally began to make sense.

I’d taken a job working in a nursing home.

One day, I started a conversation with a hospice nurse.

She brought up the “old Mercy Medical Center” that had been built in 1912.

This was the hospital where I’d delivered my daughter. We talked about how it had long since closed and been rebuilt elsewhere.

The nurse told me about all of the stories she’d heard about a comforting spirit that often appeared in the maternity ward.

A nun in an old-fashioned habit had seen by many people over the years.

Some believed this nun to be an angel watching over new mothers and their babies.

And then it hit me like a wave: the nun. The visit. The peace I’d felt. That was no ordinary nun!

Looking back, I believe she was an angel.

A presence from beyond, sent to bless and to remind me that heaven celebrates with us, too.

The question remains: How many of us have been touched by angels — and never even known?
