My baby was born too soon. But in the darkest moment, an angel came. I felt his wings. I still do. This is my true angel story.

⚠️ Content Warning: Pregnancy Loss ⚠️
This story contains a deeply personal experience involving miscarriage. If you are sensitive to themes of pregnancy loss or grief, please take care while reading.
In 2002, I found out I was pregnant again—and somehow, I already knew he was going to be a boy.
Everything felt right.
My boyfriend and I were in love and happy.
We rode our bikes to the beach near our house.
The ocean was sparkling like it always did in late afternoon light.
That day, the water was a little rough, but nothing dangerous—no red flags, no warnings.
I waded in, trying to cool off and ease the nausea that had been plaguing me since the beginning of my pregnancy.
But before I knew it, a rip current caught me.
I knew not to panic, to go with the flow, and eventually I caught the right current that carried me out of it.
I made it back to shore, shaken but safe.
Still.
Something felt … off.
I sat on the beach for a while, feeling sick and lightheaded.
A deep sense of dread came over me, the kind you can’t explain with logic.
Not long after, I went to the doctor and they found a bulge in the placenta.
I was told to rest—no biking, no swimming, no lifting.
I followed orders.
Then one afternoon, I was sitting outside with my close friend.
A sudden, sick feeling washed over me.
I rushed inside and found blood.
I knew I had to go to the hospital immediately.
At the hospital, I was told I was in labor. I was only 21 weeks pregnant.
The nurse began preparing the bed for the baby, but then the doctor came in and stopped her.
He looked at me like I wasn’t even human and said, “Don’t bother. This baby isn’t going to make it.”
My boyfriend pushed back. “What do you mean?”
“There’s no hope this early in the pregnancy,” the doctor replied coldly. “The baby is going to die. We’re not setting anything up.”
My boyfriend asked, “What would you do if this was happening to you?”
The doctor didn’t answer.
Instead, he called security.
Within minutes, officers showed up.
He had my boyfriend thrown out and told them, “If he steps foot on this property again, arrest him.”
Before they were gone, the doctor grabbed my friend and said, “You’re staying. She needs someone with her.”
Thank God she did.
I felt an evil in that room I can’t describe.
Every time the doctor came near me, I could feel it—dark, heavy, suffocating.
I didn’t say anything out loud at first.
I just kept praying silently so that whatever dark energy was there wouldn’t hear me.
Then things got worse.
They had started an IV in my left hand, but it infiltrated.
So instead of going into my bloodstream, the medication pooled into my hand.
I felt everything.
No pain relief. It was as if my body was being ripped apart from the inside.
And then—I felt my baby’s hand.
Not physically, but unmistakably.
My baby reached out and held my finger from soul to soul.
I don’t know how else to explain it, except to say: he was there.
And he was holding on.
I kept going.
When the doctor finally told me to push, something deep inside me screamed that something was horribly wrong.
The nurse, standing beside me, kept smoothing my hair and whispering, “Please, God, help us.”
The doctor snapped, “Enough with that. There’s no hope for this baby.”
I pushed.
The doctor stood back, away from the table, and let my baby fall onto it.
I’ll never forget the sound—my son taking his first breath… and his last breath.
That’s when it started.
From the ceiling, near the AC vent, a shadow began to form.
At first it was faint, but then it grew, moving toward me.
It wasn’t just a shadow—it was something darker, more intelligent, and more terrifying than anything I’d ever felt.
Evil.
I began praying out loud.
“Please, God. Take my son’s soul before this evil takes him. Please, God, take him now. Please, God. The evil is getting closer. Please, Dear God, help us!”
And then everything changed.
The room filled with light—not hospital light, not fluorescent light.
This light was warm, radiant, golden.
I felt a presence so powerful, so peaceful, so unmistakably divine.
Massive golden wings unfurled from one end of the room to the other.
They wrapped around me and my baby.
I felt certain it was Archangel Gabriel.
I turned to my friend and said, “Do you see the light?”
She said, “No, you’re just completely traumatized.”
But I knew for certain what I experienced.
It wasn’t imagination.
I wasn’t hallucinating, no matter what the doctors or anyone else thought.
I know I saw an angel.
Gabriel wrapped his wings around us, shielding my baby from the evil that had been advancing toward us.
The dark shadow, like thick black smoke, fled the room so fast I could almost feel the air shift.
I held my baby for hours until I finally fell asleep.
Then my sister-in-law gently took him from my arms.
When I woke, I was still crying.
My son, my Joshua Thomas, was gone.
I had him cremated.
His ashes sit on the shelf behind me now, as I write this.
But even now, as I think of him, I feel him with me.
I feel Gabriel.
I feel the angels.
Six months after the loss of my son, I told God I was ready to try again.
What I didn’t know was that I already was pregnant with my daughter.
As I later found out, she was conceived on the very day I was originally due to give birth to Joshua!
She looks exactly like him.
I light a candle for Joshua Thomas every year on his birthday.
And I know without a doubt: he’s watching over his little sister every day.
On the darkest day of my life – I got a glimpse of heaven, where my son was carried home.
