My husband, Jim, and I were driving the scenic route along Indiana’s White River.
It was the kind of drive where you roll the windows down and let the breeze make you forget time.
The road wound and twisted.
A narrow ribbon pressed between the river on one side and a little league baseball field on the other.
As we dipped under an overpass, the road curved sharply uphill.
A brick wall rose before us, holding the railroad tracks above.

“Jim! Look out!” I screamed. “He’s going to hit us! Get over!”
Jim couldn’t see a thing.
The wall blocked his view.
And by all logic, it blocked mine too.
But something in my voice – something in that moment – made him wrench the wheel hard.
He pulled us into the parking lot of the baseball field.
And that’s when it happened.
A huge truck came flying around the curve in the opposite direction of us, going way too fast.
It accidentally veered way over the center line and barreled through the exact spot we’d been seconds earlier.
If Jim hadn’t swerved, there’s no question: we would have been hit head-on.
Even now, I replay that moment in my mind. How did I see what I couldn’t possibly have seen?
Was it a premonition?
A flash of intuition?
Or was it a guardian angel whispering in my ear, saving our lives?
Whenever I lose hope, I think back to that moment.
I remember that something greater is watching over us, offering more grace and protection than we can possibly imagine.
