A True Miracle Story I Still Can’t Explain

A true miracle story about what I found in the woods after days of rain … it made no sense, but I’ll never forget.

One afternoon I was deer hunting.

As I always do, I was reading my Bible.

The photo you see above is a real photo of my Bible.

It’s very old and very cherished.

Yes, that’s a dollar bill inside.

I mark my place with it.

The face on the bill is directed to where the reading should start.

When I have this Bible with me, I’m never broke – financially or spiritually.

My Bible has traveled with me everywhere – Florida, Georgia, Texas, Alabama, Kentucky, Pennsylvania, and Illinois – for hunting adventures.

But back to that day the miracle happened …

I was in an open platform stand, up in a tree with no roof.

I looked up from my Bible, and there was a fine young buck near a tree with several deer behind him in the woods.

I put down the Bible and picked up my binoculars.

The buck was a youngster, so I thanked God for sharing him with me as 6-8 more deer took their time and meandered towards me.

I had to stay quiet and still and didn’t move from that spot until after dark.

I climbed down from the platform stand and happily walked back to my truck and drove the 90 miles back to my home.

When I was nearly home, probably about 80 miles from my hunting spot, I suddenly realized:

Oops.

I left my old and beloved Bible behind in the woods.

I laughed to myself because now I had a good reason to go hunting in the same spot soon!

Unfortunately, the next day it rained … and it rained … and then it rained!

The following day, when the rain finally cleared, I headed back.

Conditions were terrible after all that rain, and I had to wear hip waders to get to the open air tree stand.

The stand had received a couple of inches of rain.

I was really getting depressed as I climbed the ladder, knowing my beloved old Bible was probably destroyed…

Dry.

Yes, the Bible was perfectly DRY … and still open to James.

So I ask: who protected my Bible?

I’ve never been able to explain it.

But I’ve never forgotten it either.

Closing Reflections On This True Miracle Story

Maybe a miracle is in the eye of the beholder.

This experience mattered because that Bible wasn’t just a book to this storyteller.

It was something he loved.

A miracle doesn’t need an explanation to be real to the one who experiences it.

Sometimes it’s something that meets you in a deep and personal way.

And for this storyteller, that Bible held special significance.

It leads me to believe that maybe a true miracle story isn’t about proof.

It’s about what something means to you … which never requires any proof at all.
