The light of the world in the light of the world –
Ah yes, I see him.
He is exactly the poem I wanted to write.
*** This excerpt is from the poem “White Heron Rises Over Blackwater” by Mary Oliver. I love this poem so much. In it, Mary describes how she’s struggling and striving to write an incredible poem full of “light.” She then sees a gorgeous white heron soaring effortlessly above her and realizes that he embodies the incredible light she was toiling to create with pencil and paper.
This poem touched me so much and immediately made me think of my role in raising Trevor.
I’ve always wondered if I’ll ever do any noteworthy work in my life. Sometimes I beat myself up inside because I think I haven’t and won’t. And then I’m reminded that raising this amazing little “light of the world” is the most extraordinary work.
