Saved By An Angel: The Car That Drove Itself

No brakes. Oncoming traffic. Then the car turned on its own. Was I saved by an angel? This is my true story that’s impossible to explain…

It had been two years since I lost my son, Heath, and some days still felt heavy.

On this particular day, I was running an errand with my daughter Amanda, and I was driving.

We were driving along, going about 30 to 35 miles per hour, when suddenly a car blew through a stop sign right in front of us.

I didn’t have time to react.

We hit it broadside.

The impact knocked the breath out of me.

I remember the airbags going off, the sound, the force of it.

Since I was so disoriented, I didn’t immediately realize that my brake line had been severed in the crash.

I had no brakes.

The car was still moving—out of control—and heading straight toward oncoming traffic.

And then, out of nowhere, something took over.

The car suddenly straightened.

It turned sharply and pulled onto the sidewalk, as if it were being steered.

It passed directly between two utility poles without touching either of them.

Then it slowed… and came to a stop.

Amanda and I got out of the car, shaken and in shock.

The car was totaled.

It seemed a miracle in itself that, somehow, neither of us was seriously hurt.

When the police arrived, they examined the scene. They told me they couldn’t understand how the car had left the road the way it did.

The trail of leaking brake fluid showed the direction we had been traveling, and then, suddenly, a sharp turn up onto the sidewalk, ending perfectly between the poles.

It didn’t make sense.

We were taken to the hospital to be checked out.

While we were there, Amanda pulled me aside.

“I have to tell you something,” she said. We sat down, and she looked right into my eyes.

She said that during the accident, she felt certain she saw her brother, Heath, sitting behind the wheel.

She said she watched him guide the car, steering it onto the sidewalk, and keeping us out of traffic.

She told me she could see his face and his hands on the wheel.

As I mentioned before, Heath had passed away two years earlier.

I don’t have any easy explanation for what happened that day.

But I know this: we were protected.

Closing Reflections on Being Saved By An Angel

Stories like this raise a question I’ve heard again and again and also wondered about myself.

In moments of danger or deep need, people often describe being helped, guided, or protected by something they can’t see. But in cases like this one, that presence doesn’t feel mysterious or unknown.

It feels intimate. Sometimes people see a face, sometimes they hear a voice, sometimes they’re simply overcome with an instantly recognizable feeling.

But in some way, they know: someone they’ve loved and lost is there with them.

Is it possible that our departed loved ones remain connected to us in ways we don’t fully understand?

That they’re still aware of us, still present in our lives, even, at times, still able to step in to offer a helping hand?

I can’t say for certain.

But after collecting and listening to stories like this one for well over a year, it makes it very hard to dismiss the possibility.
