How To Make Chocolate-Covered Strawberry Hearts

Looking back over presents I’ve received for different holidays, the ones that really stand out for me aren’t the big or flashy or expensive gifts. 

The presents that come to my mind are the ones where someone put a little of their own time and thought (and heart and soul!) into the gift.

That’s why I love these chocolate-covered strawberry hearts for a special occasion, like Valentine’s Day or an anniversary.


These chocolate strawberries are simple and classic. But, at the same time, they’re also really special because they’re handmade by you!

The step-by-step recipe is below, but before we get to that, we should go over some kitchen tools you’ll need and some keys success with these chocolate-covered strawberry hearts.


The Kitchen Tools You’ll Need for Chocolate-Covered Strawberry Hearts

To pull off a perfect-looking heart-shaped chocolate-covered strawberry, make sure you have these tools on hand (they’ll make the job a lot easier!):

1.) A Small, Sharp Paring Knife

A small paring knife is the best tool for carving out the perfect heart shape.

2.) Two Basic Table Knives/Butter Knives

The best method I’ve figured out for dipping the strawberries without getting fingerprints or smudges on the chocolate: Hold a knife in each hand and roll the strawberry – working with one heart at a time – around in the chocolate. Then use one knife to scoop out each heart and allow all of the excess chocolate to drip off.

3.) Parchment Paper

Parchment allows the chocolate strawberries to cool properly, hold their heart shape, and not stick!


Keys To Success With Chocolate-Covered Strawberry Hearts

There are a few lessons I had to learn the hard way before creating the perfect chocolate-covered strawberry hearts. Hopefully these tips will save you any anguish and make the process really easy:

Read The Recipe Before You Begin

Read over the recipe before you even begin. That way, you’ll be completely prepared for what’s coming next. And you won’t suddenly realize – halfway through the recipe – that you don’t have something you really need!

Dry The Hearts Before Dipping

After cutting the strawberries into a heart shape, thoroughly dry them with paper towel. Melted chocolate doesn’t cling well to damp strawberries.

Don’t Overheat the Chocolate

Whatever you do, don’t overheat the chocolate! Microwave the chocolate for just a few seconds at a time, remove and stir, then repeat. I’ve learned this the hard way: if you overheat the chocolate, it’ll turn into a hardened, lumpy mess. And it’ll be impossible to dip the strawberries!

Move The Process Along Quickly

After dipping, it takes a while for the strawberries to cool. You can move the process along really quickly by placing the chocolate-dipped strawberries in the fridge to cool.

Practice Makes Perfect

If this is your first time making chocolate-covered strawberries, buy enough ingredients for a double batch. Make the first batch a practice run. The good news is that even the mistakes will still taste incredible, even if they don’t necessarily look incredible!

Chocolate-Covered Strawberry Hearts

Here’s a simple step-by-step guide to create beautiful heart-shaped chocolate-covered strawberries. Surprise someone special with a handmade treat!


  • 6 large strawberries, thoroughly rinsed
  • 4-ounce bar semi-sweet chocolate
  • Red decorating icing


  1. Using a small sharp paring knife, slice stems off of strawberries and cut them in half lengthwise.
  2. Cut a small triangle-shaped notch at the top of each half to begin to create the heart shape.
  3. Using the paring knife, round out any sharp edges to shape each half into a heart.
  4. Important Step: Thoroughly dry the berries with paper towel. The chocolate won’t cling to the berries if they’re damp.
  5. Break up the chocolate bar into small squares and place in a microwave-safe bowl. Microwave for 1 minute, remove, and stir. Place back in microwave and heat for 10-15 seconds more, depending upon how much the chocolate has melted. Remove, stir, and repeat this process until chocolate squares are nearly melted.
  6. Important Note: Be very careful with this process! If you heat the chocolate for even a few seconds too long, it will begin to solidify – making it difficult/impossible to dip the strawberries. The goal: heat the chocolate squares until they are nearly melted, then stir until they melt fully into a smooth liquid.
  7. Set out a large sheet of parchment paper on the counter. Next, work quickly to dip the strawberries while the chocolate is still warm. Drop one heart at a time into the melted chocolate. Use two table knives to turn the heart around in the chocolate, making sure it’s completely coated in chocolate. Use one knife to scoop the heart out of the chocolate, allow any excess to drip off, then place on the parchment.
  8. Allow the chocolate hearts to cool. This can take an hour at room temperature. To move the process along quickly, clear space in the fridge and place the parchment flat on a shelf in the fridge to cool.
  9. When chocolate is completely cool, use the paring knife to trim excess chocolate off each berry and perfect each heart. Decorate the berries with red icing. Serve and enjoy!

Storage: Arrange berries so they lie flat in a large container (they shouldn’t overlap), cover, and store in the fridge.


If this is your first time making this recipe, you may wish to purchase enough ingredients for a double batch. It can take a little practice to get the strawberry hearts to look perfect. But the good news is that even the mistakes will always taste perfect!
